Subject: [JVP Talk] ADC: Contact State Department re: Clinton's Trip to
Mid East
AMERICAN-ARAB
ANTI-DISCRIMINATION COMMITTEE 2/27/09 TAKE
ACTION NOW! Secretary Clinton Heads to The Mid East This Weekend! As
you know the Obama Administration has made a commitment to engage in peace
negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. Most recently, Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton and Special Envoy George Mitchell have traveled to the
region. The United States is scheduled to donate close to 1 billion dollars
for reconstruction in Gaza and has pledged to alleviate the humanitarian
crisis in the Gaza Strip. This
week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called upon the State of Israel to
allow humanitarian aid to enter into the Gaza Strip. The Gaza Strip has been
blockaded by Israel and the civilians in the strip continue to face the
hardships of daily life without sufficient food and water. Secretary
Clinton's statements address the problem at the very foundation of the
humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel must permit the borders to be open for
life in Gaza to improve. Take
a moment to send a pre-written letter to Secretary Clinton and President Obama
thanking them for calling upon Israel to open the crossings and urging them
to continue to do so to help the civilians in Gaza. Click

Philadelphia Israeli Apartheid Week Calendar
First launched in Toronto in 2005, IAW has grown to become one of the most
important global events in the Palestine solidarity calendar. Last year,
more than 25 cities around the world participated in the week's activities,
which also commemorated 60 years since the expulsion of the Palestinian people
from their homes and land in 1947-1948. IAW 2008 was launched with a live
broadcast from the South African township of Soweto by Palestinian leader and
former member of the Israeli Knesset, Azmi Bishara.
This year, IAW occurs in the wake of Israel's barbaric assault against the
people of Gaza. Lectures, films, and actions will make the point that
these latest massacres further confirm the true nature of Israeli
Apartheid. IAW 2009 will continue to build and strengthen the growing
Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement at a global level.
Join us in Philadelphia for a week of action and education.

"The Soul in Depression"
One in ten Americans, and even more dramatically, about
one in four women, will experience clinical depression at some point in their
lives. In this program we explore spiritual dimensions of this illness and its
aftermath.
{ This is an encore presentation of a program last
broadcast in 2006 }
>> Check it out at

"The Nature of Human Vitality"
We're increasingly aware in our culture of the many faces
of depression, and we've become conversant in the language of psychological
analysis and medical treatment for it. But depression has a profound spiritual
effect that is much harder to speak about and can often only be traced years
onward. Still, like many things that are difficult to speak of -- and given the
epidemic scale of this illness in our society -- this is important reflection
for our common life. The three voices in this program bring rare, brave, and
helpful insights into the light.
Depression is not essentially about being sad, or down,
or blue, though these may be symptoms. In the illuminating language of Andrew
Solomon in this week's program, the opposite of depression is not happiness --
it is "human vitality." It can have purely physiological origins. It
may be triggered by old sadnesses grown unbearable or anger turned inward, as
one saying goes. But it becomes a way of being in, and moving through, the
world.
But a cautionary word is necessary. In the midst of
depression, very little if anything is possible in the way of spiritual
reflection. The insights of this program are all hard-won and came much, much
later after a period of recovery and healing. If you know someone who is
depressed now, or if you yourself are in that state, go gently, seek help, and
don't expect spiritual breakthroughs.
In a section of this week's program that many people
describe as helpful, Parker Palmer tells of the friend who helped him most
during his worst episode. The friend came and sat silently with him, day after
day, and "merely" massaged his feet. In such simple human gestures we
find the most essential comfort.
I RECOMMEND READING:
"The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression"
by Andrew Solomon
There are three exceptional books to recommend from this
program. Andrew Solomon's National Book Award winner, "The Noonday
Demon," lives up to its subtitle -- it is an "atlas" of
depression, with voluminous detail and insight into historical, sociological,
medical, and religious approaches to this disease. Solomon's intimacy with his
subject deepens and grounds his academic investigation.
"Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of
Vocation"
by Parker J. Palmer
Parker Palmer devotes two chapters of his small, powerful
book, "Let Your Life Speak," to recounting his experience of
depression and his spiritual insights from it. They are set, appropriately, in
the context of his larger reflections on discerning meaning and purpose in the
whole of a life.
"Rilke's Book of Hours: Love Poems to God"
by Rainer Maria Rilke, translated by Anita Barrows and
Joanna Macy
Anita Barrows' translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's Book
of Hours:
Love Poems to God is among my most treasured reading.
Together with her colleague, the Buddhist scholar Joanna Macy, Barrows has
produced a creative work that captures Rilke's lush language and ideas better
than any more literal translation I have seen. These are poems that nourish in
the light and the darkness of life.
