I hope you’re off to a great New Year.

The Committee of Seventy is again charging forward to protect the rights of the region’s voters and we need your help! We’re looking for two part-time, temporary Voting Rights Activists to help us improve voter access in Philadelphia.

We’re advocating for the splitting of targeted voting divisions in Philadelphia that exceed the legal limit of 1,200 registered voters. Problems with these divisions first came to our attention through the work of our Voter Protection Program volunteers because they saw long lines and voter access problems, particularly in high-turnout elections. Because of this potential threat to voter access, we’re working with voters to petition the Court of Common Pleas to split these overcrowded divisions.

The temporary Voting Rights Activists will work on a team to collect signatures of registered voters in the targeted divisions. The position will last the duration of the project (approximately one month) and the four-hour shifts will be on weekday afternoons and evenings. Compensation will be $8.00 an hour and travel expenses incurred during the shift will be reimbursed.

If you’re interested in helping or know someone else who is, please contact Jon David, Director of Voter Services at 215-557-3600, ext. 110 or jdavid@seventy.org.

Call Your Senators Today

Key Vote on Global Warming Could Be Tomorrow: Call Today!

As soon as tomorrow, your senators could vote on whether to tie the hands of the Obama administration in its efforts to address global warming.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (AK) plans to offer an amendment that would revoke the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act.

Last month, the Obama administration formally stated that global warming gases substantially endanger the health and well being of the public. Because of this endangerment finding, the administration is now required to move forward with sensible regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sen. Murkowski's amendment would deny the administration this important tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The EPA's ability to ensure basic minimum emission standards for coal-fired power plants and other large carbon emitters is an indispensible tool for combating global warming. It's also currently the only tool available to the government to reduce carbon emissions.

Dozens of environmental, faith, and social justice organizations have united against this attack on the Clean Air Act. With the help of your voices now, we can defeat this amendment.

Take Action
Call your senators today and ask them to vote "no" on Sen. Murkowski's proposed amendment to revoke EPA authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

Use FCNL's website to find your senators' phone numbers and talking points to help you make the call. Or call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121, OR 1-800- 828-0498 and ask to be connected to your senator's office.

Read a letter defending the EPA's endangerment finding sent to Senate colleagues by Democrats on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

Put Cops On The
Wall Street Beat

Unless we have real cops on the Wall Street beat, bankers will continue their reckless behavior, gouging us with credit card fees and high interest rates while putting our jobs and our investments at risk. The House passed legislation creating a Consumer Financial Protection Agency, putting new cops on the beat. But the Senate may be caving to the bank lobby, which is planning to swarm Capitol Hill TOMORROW. Tell The Senate TODAY, Support The CFPA. GO»

The struggle to control the big banks is coming to a head in Congress. The House has passed legislation that creates a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency, to put cops on the Wall Street beat.

But the bank lobby is going all out to kill the Consumer Financial Protection Agency in the Senate.

In fact, the bank lobby and its ally the Chamber of Commerce will be swarming Capitol Hill TOMORROW to pressure Senators. Those of us who don't have paid lobbyists living in Washington need to make our voices heard NOW.

Don't let Wall Street write the rules! Click here to tell your Senators, "Support the Consumer Financial Protection Agency."

Top bank watchdog Elizabeth Warren recently defined the stakes. This is simply about "whether we are going to let the industry continue to write the rules -- to keep the cops off the beat -- or whether the financial crisis actually changed something."

Why is a consumer agency so important? We have seen the banks use their power to impose hidden credit card fees, high interest rates and outrageous payday loan costs. They gouge consumers - and then when their bets go bad, they come to us to bail them out. We can't let that go on.

The Consumer Protection Agency is but a first step in curbing the power of the big banks. But if the banks can stop that, they will gut any real reform. And they will go back to paying themselves million-dollar bonuses while sticking taxpayers with their losses.

Some politicians refuse to get the message. Some apparently think they can carry the bank lobby's water now, and voters will forget later.

It's up to us to send the message of reform loud and clear now, Tell your Senator, consumers need a cop on the financial beat. And they can't let the big bank lobbies continue to write the rules.

Sincerely,

Robert L. Borosage, Co-director

Tell General Mills to stop using palm oil that causes rainforest destruction.

Dear Friend,

Yes. It's true. General Mills, makers of some of America's favorite cereals and snacks, uses palm oil from plantations that destroy huge tracts of rainforests in Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. Palm oil is a common ingredient in General Mills brands and products, from Betty Crocker and Pillsbury to Nature Valley Granola Bars and Yogurt Burst Cheerios.

Tell General Mills to clean up its palm oil supply chain and make a commitment to source only socially and environmentally responsible palm oil.

The Facts on General Mills and Palm Oil

  • Palm oil for General Mills products is causing valuable rainforests to be burned and cleared away
  • Indonesia's government plans to convert up to 18 million hectares of land into palm oil plantations by 2020
  • More than 20 million of Indonesia's Indigenous and forest-dependent people are at risk due to palm oil expansion
  • Endangered species-including orangutans, Sumatran tigers and elephants-are at risk from palm oil expansion
  • Indonesia is the 3rd largest greenhouse gas polluter, behind China and the U.S.
  • Deforestation causes 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions

While General Mills has expressed concern about recent reports of rainforest destruction for palm oil and has begun to engage its suppliers, this leading company must take stronger action to ensure the protection of rainforests, communities and the climate, as other companies have already done. RAN has asked General Mills to stop this destruction by only sourcing socially and environmentally responsible palm oil, but they need to hear from you.

Send a letter to Kendall Powell, the CEO of General Mills, and let him know that you don't want rainforest destruction caused by the General Mills products you buy.

Thanks so much for helping to set General Mills straight!

For the forests,

Ashley Schaeffer

Green Your Appliances: Microwave Maintenance

Image removed by sender.

Image removed by sender.

Unless you're switching to a more energy-efficient model, it's usually better to repair a broken appliance than to replace it. But there's a lot you can do to prevent breakdowns in the first place. This week we're offering tips about how to extend your appliances' life.

Tip #1: Maintain Your Microwave

Keeping your microwave clean by covering food (a plate or glass lid will do) can make it last significantly longer. The vapor released when the food cooks permeates the machine's interior and can, over time, cause problems. Vapor also transfers grease and residue, resulting in rust and corrosion. As for bags of popcorn? Put them on an inverted bowl or plate. They contain foil strips that can warp the turntable.
