Rich gave an outline on how the EWO
page was designed, Sally then spoke about contributions to PDA and
then the talk by Ray McGovern began at the 14:00 minute mark.
Unfortunately, there was audio interference that lasted for awhile
and finally ended at the 19:00 mark.
Ray felt that the next few months are
Netanyahu's last, best chance to try and hit Iran by bombing Irans'
nuclear sites. One of the problems that make reducing tensions with
Iran difficult is that the forces on hand didn't have any way of
communicating with each other. Americans and Iranians were using hand
signals. A sensible proposal has been made to the very highly
pro-Israel Senator Carl Levin, but the proposal is still bottled up
there. Netanyahu showed great disrespect to Obama, to which Obama has
failed to respond forcefully. Fortunately, Obama is showing a bit of
spine, so there's some reason for optimism that there won't be a war,
at least not before the election.
Sandy had an extensive question
concerning a “red line” that Iran couldn't cross without starting
a war with the US. As Iran is very clearly not building a nuclear
weapon, but as Netanyahu is insisting that the red line should be
whether or not Iran has a nuclear weapons capability (which,
arguably, they already have), that would mean that Iran has already
crossed it.
The various complexes
(Military-industrial-etc.) are committed to Israel, but that
commitment probably can't survive much longer versus phenomenon like
the Arab Spring. A major problem with Israel starting a war with Iran
would be the anti-semitic blow-back. Romney has made it clear that he
will support an Israeli attack on Iran, so we on the left must make
that consequences of such an attack clear to people.
Sandy related some cheerful stories
about getting his Congressperson to sign onto some good bills.
